Loudoun County Fire-Rescue services received a call
about the fire at the old school about 6:35 a.m., spokeswoman Mary
Maguire said. Units from the Loudoun County Department of Fire, Rescue and
Emergency Management responded along with crews from surrounding areas
including the Carroll Manor fire company.
"Due to the extensive damage to the building, the structure
began collapsing," Maguire said. "Firefighters established defensive
operations to keep the fire from spreading into the building." Heavy fire
destroyed the auditorium section that was added to the building in 1928.
Firefighters brought the fire under control about 8:45 a.m. Losses are
estimated at $300,000.
The Loudoun County Fire Marshal's Office has determined the
cause of the fire to be accidental in nature. "The fire appears to have
originated in an area around a propane furnace located in the basement of
the auditorium," Maguire said.
E-281 from
Carroll Manor responded with Assistant Chief Andy Arnold as Officer. Quint
14 was transferred to Loudon County Station 2 while Engine Tanker 143 was
transferred to Lucketts.
